Cotton Field Wild Oats softball cricket team said they are looking to put the disappointment of losing to last year’s champions behind them and win this year’s third Guyana Cup tournament.
According to skipper Trevis Simon, the players were disappointed in their defeat to eventual champions New York and will be looking to make amends this year especially after winning the inaugural Guyana Cup softball tournament in 2011.
Simon said the players have become much more accustomed and confident playing with the big ball which is used in the Guyana Cup.
“For this year’s tournament our first goal will be to get to the semis and then we take it from there. The team for this year’s tournament is much more experienced as opposed to the other teams we would have fielded,” Simon added.
This year’s Guyana Cup softball tournament gets underway on November 8 and ends on November 10 with teams the United States of America, Canada and Guyana battling it out for cash prizes and trophies.
The tournament, which was launched last month, will see the preliminary rounds taking place on November 8-9 and the semi-finals and finals in the Open T20 and Masterst20 competitions battling it out at the Georgetown Cricket Club ground, Bourda on November 10.
“We know pretty well that all the other teams would be coming at us very hard and so we have to be very prepared and focused for every and anything they will throw at us,” said Simon.
He added that his team’s batting was strong and included some very experienced campaigners led by the versatile Ramesh Narine.
“The bowling department may be a little short but nevertheless they (the bowlers) are capable of doing the job on the day as required,” he added.
“Come game day on the 8th of November the Cotton Field Wild Oats will be out there well prepared and ready to regain our title,” Simon ended.
