Sullivan Niles will be spending the next week in prison after his wife’s denial that she made a report to the police that he threatened to kill her prompted a city magistrate to order an investigation.
Magistrate Judy Latchman ordered that Melissa Niles’ report to the police be investigated after she claimed yesterday that she never told the police he placed a knife to her neck and threatened to kill her.
In the interim, the magistrate remanded Sullivan to prison until November 15, when the case will be heard at Court 10.
During his arraignment yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, it was alleged that on November 3, at Lamaha Park, Sullivan threatened Melissa.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Prosecutor Vishnu Hunt said that Sullivan had placed a knife to his wife’s neck and threatened to kill her during an argument.
It was as this point that attorney Paul Fung-a-Fat told the court that Melissa did not wish to offer evidence against Sullivan, since he was the sole provider for the home.
When asked by Magistrate Latchman whether Fung-a-Fat’s statement was true, Melissa said that her husband never threatened to kill her.
Magistrate Latchman then informed her that she should speak the truth because she could be fined or even sent to jail for wasting the court’s time. She then provided sworn testimony but it fell short of convincing the court and enabling her husband to walk free.
