The Cummings Lodge Secondary School will celebrate its fiftieth anniversary Saturday, November 9, with a fund-raising anniversary dinner at the Guyana International Convention Centre, under the theme ‘Building Excellence on Proud Traditions.’
According to a release from past students of the school, the event will honour several persons for their contributions towards the development of the school over the years. Another high point of the evening will be the reminiscences by several generations of students of ‘golden moments’ at the school.
The release urged former students of Cummings Lodge Secondary School to support this venture to give back to the institution that made a significant impact on their lives. Proceeds from the event will assist in the construction of a tarmac at the school for basketball, volleyball and tennis. Tickets costing $6,000 each, are available at the school. The L shaped school building, constructed by the Ministry of Works and Hydraulics, was completed in December 1962 and handed over to the then Minister of Education CV Nunes.
The building was originally to house an all-age school but the residents in the area successfully petitioned for it to be converted into a secondary school. On September 17, 1963, the Cummings Lodge Government Secondary School became a reality with an enrolment of 234 students, mainly from the Primary tops of Graham’s Hall Primary and other neighbouring primary schools. The first head teacher was DP Kunar.
Over the years the school has produced several students who have gone on to make significant contributions to Guyana’s development while others have made an impact in countries around the world, the release added.
