The Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA) in collaboration the founder members of Rollers Volleyball Club of New Amsterdam will stage the inaugural Rollers Old Boys Champion of Champions lien volleyball competition for teams in Berbice.
The tournament is scheduled to spike off this weekend at the Skeldon Back Centre Ground, Upper Corentyne.
According to a press release, the aim of the tournament is to expose players in that part of Berbice to competitive volleyball.
Volleyball is played on the Upper Corentyne but only at a recreational level while the last time a Skeldon
team participated in a BVA competition was in 2000. Recently, Clifton Phillips, an Upper Corentyne resident and the founder/captain of the original Rollers Volleyball Club, presented a quantity of trophies and medals to the BVA on behalf himself, Evan Chee, Sydney Thorne, Derwin Kendall, Gavin Dhaness, Walter Bascom, Bhadree ”Chas” Narine and John Gajadhar the founder members of that club. In the mid seventies, Clifton Philips aka “Chinee” was a setter on the national team while Evan Chee became the first Berbician to represent Guyana at the U19 level.
Walter Bascom later captained the national team in the eighties.
The competition will be used on the first day to identify new talent in the Upper Corentyne area and the top teams will clash on the second day to decide the Champion of Champions.
The champion team will receive a replica of the lien trophy and medals while the second and third place teams will also receive trophies and medals. Trophies will be presented to the Best Spiker, Best Setter and MVP.
Arrangements will be made by the BVA to facilitate the transportation of teams from the West Berbice, Canje, New Amsterdam and Lower Corentyne to Upper Corentyne. For more information teams can contact the BVA Secretary, Levi Nedd on telephone number 641-9592
