A man was yesterday placed on $400,000 bail after he was charged with causing the death of sexagenarian Roy Harilall last Thursday night at the Prospect Public Road, East Bank Demerara.
According to police, Raymond Brito was driving motor car PDD 7385 in a manner dangerous to the public when he caused the death of Roy Harilall on November 7. He pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Prosecutor Bharat Mangru said that on the day in question at around 11:50 pm, Brito was proceeding south along the western carriageway at Prospect, while Harilall was riding a motorcycle proceeding south.
He added that the two collided which resulted in Harilall being severely injured which subsequently led to his death.
Mangru did not object to bail being granted but advised that it should be substantial. He requested also that the Brito’s passport be lodged.
Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry granted bail in the sum of $400,000. The matter returns to the Providence Magistrate Court on December 23 for reports and fixtures.
Kowsilla Harilall had said that subsequent to the accident, her husband was taken to the East Bank Regional Hospital at Diamond, where he was treated and transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital. He was pronounced dead on arrival.
She also said that Harilall was travelling home from work when tragedy struck.
Kowsilla said reports were that her husband was intoxicated, but that was not so as he only consumes alcohol on Saturday nights, since that’s when he receives his wages.
A post-mortem examination conducted yesterday stated that Harilall died as a result of multiple injuries.
