A man allegedly slit the throat of his visiting lover before he was found hanging from the end of a rope in what appears to be the grisly culmination of an abusive relationship that rocked the West Ruimveldt community yesterday.
Dead are Kenroy Crandon, 22, originally of Fyrish, Corentyne, Berbice and Sherry Ann Tiwari, 23, said to be originally of Parika, East Bank Essequibo. At the time they were at Lot 27 West Ruimveldt, where Crandon resided with an aunt and other relatives.
When Stabroek News arrived on the scene, the police had not yet taken away the bodies and were in the process of doing their investigations.
Recounting the events leading to the discovery of the bodies of the two persons in her home, a female relative of Crandon said that sometime after 9 am yesterday she saw her nephew getting ready to leave the home. The woman, who identified herself as Crandon’s aunt but asked that her name not be reported, said he was going to work late because that was around the time that the rains eased. She said she suggested that he don a sweater so that he would be able to ride through the rain.
“But a while after I heard noise in the kitchen, so I go upstairs and saw him cooking. So I say, ‘Oh is you come back…ok.’ And I come downstairs. The rain start back heavy and I go in back my room and lie down,” she said.
“At about 4:30 going to 5 pm, I heard noise upstairs. My cousin came and I asked him if he hearing noise. “I called out, ‘Kenroy! Kenroy’! I called [maybe] five times and no answer. I told my cousin to let us see how best we could get upstairs,” she said.
The relative recounted that she and her cousin encountered difficulties to access the part of the house that Crandon was, since the door leading to the upstairs was locked. Referring to her cousin, the aunt said, “He break the door and slide in and opened the door for me and we run upstairs.”
However, they found the door to the bedroom where they believed Crandon was, locked. She then suggested to the cousin that he go into an adjoining bedroom and climb up in an attempt to see what was happening in the room.
The woman said that when her cousin climbed up and looked over, he told her he did not like what he was seeing. “Honestly, I thought to myself that my nephew either masturbating or he was naked. I did not think murder. So I asked what it is that he is doing,” she recounted.
She said it was when her cousin pushed in the door that she saw Kenroy hanging from the bedroom ceiling. “When he pushed open the door wider then I see her on the bed,” she said, referring to Tiwari.
She said she was at a loss because she did not even know Tiwari was in the house. She told members of the media at the scene that she heard no screams. She said the last time she actually saw the young woman alive was in early September.
The woman said she had asked her nephew not to entertain the young woman at the house.
“I refuse for she to come back and sleep here and she get vex with me,” said the man’s aunt. “I told him… I said I don’t want her in my house after she does lie nasty and always on she phone… they does get problem,” said the woman.
“After he become abusive, I said ‘girl let me carry you to church to get counselling,’” she said. Apparently, this did not happen.
The woman related that after she refused permission for Tiwari and her nephew to live in her house as a couple, Crandon told her that he cannot be living in a house and not have someone come and be with him when he wants.
She said that when Crandon went home on Saturday night, she told him she was not “encouraging nonsense” in her house. “I told him, ‘If you so want Sherry Ann the two of you go and rent somewhere and live. Come out of my house because me ain’t want shame,’” she said. “Because if anything happen in this house it gon be a big session round here, because West people fast…they like come as soon as they hear something.”
