Rajesh Jaharan was yesterday placed on $1M bail after he allegedly caused the death of taxi-driver Joel Baynes due to dangerous driving.
The police’s case is that on September 23, at 01:15hrs, Jaharan, 28, was driving motor car PNN 1530 south along Wellington Street at a fast rate and failed to stop at Robb Street, where he collided with motor car HB 9018, driven by Baynes, which was proceeding on Robb Street.
As a result, motor car HB 9018 spun and ended up in the Digicom Store building, which is on the southern side of Robb Street. Baynes, 34, was later pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Jaharan, of 1876 20th Street, Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, was represented by attorney Mark Waldron, who asked for bail, saying the accused has a fixed place of abode and is not a flight risk.
Magistrate Judy Latchman subsequently granted bail in the sum of $1M to Jaharan, who will make his next court appearance on November 27.
