Meusa makes return to local chess

After an absence of more than two years former national senior chess champion Wendell Meusa has returned to local chess and has his eyes fixed on regaining the title of national champion.

Meusa won the national chess championships in 2009 and last played in 2010, competing in a number of tournaments including the Guyana Chess Federation FIDE qualification which he won.

That year he also suffered an upset defeat to current national champion Taffin Khan in a Trophy Stall sponsored tournament.

He is one of several players participating in the Caribbean Containers Incorporated sponsored senior qualifying tournament for the title held by Khan who has won the title since.

Meusa is one of several players with the maximum two points following last Sunday’s play at the Carifesta Sports Complex.

The players in the lead after two rounds are Meusa, Anthony Drayton, Roberto Neto and Chino Chung while six other players are on one point each.

Round three is set to take place this afternoon from 5.30pm at the same venue.

The top seven players from this tournament will challenge incumbent Khan for the national title in the National Open Closed chess championships to be held at a later date.
