The report `Enmore man jailed for 18 months over death by dangerous driving,’ published in the November 13 edition of Stabroek News misquoted Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry as saying that she had revoked Derrick Da Silva’s licence for four years. Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry had stated that the man’s licence was to be disqualified.
In addition, the report stated “She added that Da Silva failed to be a competent driver since he was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident and also he was not speeding; neither was he on his cell phone to cause him to hit Adonis who was riding a motorcycle.”
The report however, was supposed to state that Sewnarine-Beharry determined that Da Silva’s incompetence was not a result of the above mentioned factors and this was used to determine her ruling.
