A man and a woman were each sentenced to three years in jail yesterday after being found guilty of drug trafficking at the end of their respective trials.
Dexter Attu, of 136 Pineapple Street, South Ruimveldt, was sentenced to three years in jail and fined $10,000 after he was found guilty of having 2.5 grammes of cocaine in his possession.
Attu had pleaded not guilty to the charge during his arraignment on July 3, 2012, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, in front of Magistrate Judy Latchman
Magistrate Fabayo Azore found Attu guilty of the offence of trafficking in narcotics after a trial which last for a period of one year and four months.
There were three witnesses who testified in the trial on the behalf of the police. Attu was represented by attorney George Thomas.
Meanwhile, Deanese Van Lange, of Lot 17 Broad Street, Charlestown, was sentenced to three years in jail after she was found guilty of having 30 grammes of cannabis in her possession for the purpose of trafficking.
She initially appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on July 19, and was remanded to prison. However, she was later granted $200,000 bail via the High Court.
The prosecution put forward a single witness in this case and Magistrate Azore found the woman guilty. In addition to her sentence, Van Lange was also fined $30,000.
