Catharanthus rosens commonly called Periwinkle, Never Done or Vinca originates from Madagascar. Over the years, botanists have been working to breed periwinkle in many colours and with large flowers. They are grown worldwide not just as an ornamental plant but also for medical purposes, being used in both Ayuvedic and Chinese medicine.
The corolla (flower) is made up of 5 petals and at the centre where they meet there is a small red or white dot. The dark green leaves are shiny with a waxy surface. This tropical plant has adapted well in Guyana and the Caribbean. Periwinkles are generally short and spreading, and flower continuously all year round.
They can be planted in full sun individually, or as a border or low hedge along driveways or pathways, and they also make attractive window boxes. They will even grow in the cracks of walls when the seeds spill.
Plant them in regular soil and fertilize with Miracle Gro All Purpose Plant Food once per month. Water daily.
Until next week, happy gardening!
