The Demerara Harbour Bridge Corporation (DHBC) yesterday bought hundreds of tickets for the 11th day of this year’s Kashif and Shanghai (K&S) football tournament paving the way for school children to be admitted free to witness the semifinal matches.
During a simple ceremony in the company’s boardroom, Finance Officer, Latchman Kumar, stated that the DHBC
was pleased to partner with the K&S Organization in this year’s 24th edition of the tournament which will involve secondary schools instead of the tradition senior ball clubs.
With the corporation’s support, all the days except the final so far will be free to school age children.
The tickets will be shared out among schools on the East Bank of Demerara.
Dinar’s Trading, Bushy Park Sawmills and Mohamed’s Enterprise are notable entities which have bought out days for tournament.
Co-founders of the K&S Organization, Aubrey ‘Shanghai’ Major and Kashif Muhammad welcomed the support and said that they will continue to do their part in the development of the discipline locally and work towards making the entire tournament admission free for school children.
This year’s competition involves 24 of the nation’s top secondary schools vying for the top honours. The competition kicks off on December 8 at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground, Bourda and concludes on January 1 at the Providence National Stadium.
The institutions placing second, third and fourth will each receive prize monies amounting to $750,000, $500,000 and $250,000, in cash respectively.
However, 75% of the total prize will also go towards a project identified by the schools.
Teams vying for the prizes will come from Georgetown, Linden, Region Seven, West Demerara, East Coast, East Bank, Region Seven and Berbice. The city teams are St. George’s Secondary, Lodge Secondary, East Ruimveldt Secondary, North Georgetown Secondary, Queen’s College, Dolphin Secondary, Christ Church Secondary and Queenstown Secondary.
Wismar/Christianburg, Wisburg Secondary, New Silver City and McKenzie High School will represent Linden. Waramadong will showcase Region Seven. The East Bank Demerara teams are Covent Garden Secondary and Friendship Secondary.
The Ancient County will be represented by Ash Education Trust while Bladen Hall, President’s College, Ann’s Grove Secondary and Annandale Secondary will come from the East Coast.
Leonora Secondary, Stewartville Secondary, Uitvlugt Secondary and Patentia Secondary are the schools from the West Side.
These were the same top 24 teams in the Digicel nationwide school’s tournament which was staged earlier this year.
Other sponsors of this year’s tournament include Ansa McAL, Beharry Group of Companies and DDL.
