Former national junior chess champion Anthony Drayton was the winner of the Guyana Chess Federation/Caribbean Containers Incorporated (CCI) senior championship qualification tournament which ended on Sunday at the Carifesta Sports Complex.
Drayton, who finished the event with six points, upset former national senior champion Wendell Meusa who finished second.
For his efforts, Dayton received the first place cheque of $15,000 and will lead seven competitors who will challenge defending senior champion Taffin Khan in the upcoming Closed senior national chess championships later this month.
The other five qualifiers include junior players Davion Mars and Roberto Neto and senior players Errol Tiwari, Glenford Corlette and Neil Khan.
Drayton and Meusa finished with six points while Mars claimed the third position with four-and-a-half points. Rounding out the bottom four qualifiers with four points each were Neto, Tiwari, Corlette and Khan.
