A 12-member jury was yesterday empanelled to preside over the murder trial of Jahora Ramnauth which is being conducted before Justice Navindra Singh in the High Court.
Ramnauth called ‘Zaimool’, 76, is on trial for the murder of her reputed husband Subaschand called ‘Bruk up’,
which occurred on April 1, 2008 at Zeeburg, West Coast Demerara.
According to reports, the couple had been drinking and later in the evening they began to row. During the row, the 45-year-old Subaschand was severely beaten. He was taken to the Leonora Diagnostic Centre, then transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he died later that night.
A post-mortem examination found that the Subaschand died of brain haemorrhage. He had also sustained a broken jaw and a fractured arm and shoulder.
Ramnauth, who neighbours said regularly beat Subaschand with whom she had been living for a year, was arrested shortly after.
Ramnauth is represented by Attorney Hukumchand while Senior State Prosecutor Judith Gildharie-Mursalin is presenting the state’s case.
The trial will continue today with the prosecution presenting its witnesses.
