Two Venezuelan women, who claimed they came to Guyana on vacation, were on Wednesday both fined for illegally entering the country.
Melanie Rodrigues and Genesis Vieira, both of Venezuela, pleaded guilty to charges of illegal entry into Guyana when they appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
They admitted that they entered Guyana on November 11, at Charity, Essequibo Coast, by sea and disembarked without the consent of an immigration officer.
Through a translator, the women confessed to the crime and claimed that they were in Guyana on vacation.
They were each subsequently fined $30,000 with an alternative of three months’ imprisonment.
