A Blairmont resident was yesterday remanded to prison on a charge of narcotics trafficking after police intercepted a bag containing over 2 kilogrammes of cannabis during its transport to Georgetown and then organised a sting to catch the owner.
The charge read to Pooran Ramoo at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court stated that on November 20, at Blairmont, West Coast Berbice, he allegedly had 2.360kg of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The case, which was first called before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, was transferred to the court of Magistrate Judy Latchman, who denied Ramoo bail and remanded him until December 3, when the case will be called again.
Prosecutor Vishnu Hunt said that acting on information, police ranks conducted a search on a red car and found a bag in the trunk.
Hunt added that the driver of the car when questioned by police said that he was given the bag by Ramoo to drop off in Georgetown. Police officers then concocted a plan to catch Ramoo, which led them to instruct the driver of the car to call Ramoo to uplift the bag. When Ramoo arrived to uplift the bag, police officers in hiding then came out and arrested him.
He was then taken to the Criminal Investigations Department Headquarters (CID), where the bag was checked in his presence and the narcotic was weighed, Hunt added.
Attorney James Bond, who appeared for Ramoo, made an application for reasonable bail to be granted, claiming that he was not a flight risk.
However, his application was unsuccessful.
