The second annual Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) International Invitational Club Festival scheduled to spike off yesterday at the National Gymnasium with three matches was affected by a blackout.
Hosted by the GVF in order to encourage the development of the sport and its players in Guyana, the tournament was set to get underway with three matches; the first an encounter between Trinidad and Tobago’s BIG SEPOS and Guyana’s Port Mourant Training Centre (PMTC), followed by a female match between YELYCO out of Suriname and the Vanguard Ladies of Guyana.
The final match was scheduled to be between the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and Young Achievers.
However, the power outage resulted in the teams being forced to sit and wait indefinitely for a new spike-off time.
Earlier the competition was officially declared open by Director of Sports Neil Kumar who thanked the teams both foreign and local for their participation. He stated that he was glad to see teams who were here the last time returning to compete, while wishing them the best of luck throughout the competition
GVF President Lenox Shuffler reiterated comments made by Kumar and encouraged the players to play hard. The action continues is set to continue today with another round of preliminary matches and semi-final with the finals being held tomorrow.
