The Guyana Government will make a financial contribution of US$50,000 ($10m) to assist in the international relief efforts in the Philippines in the wake of the devastating loss of life and property due to Typhoon Haiyan.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said that Guyana’s contribution will go to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) which launched an appeal for US$348M for relief efforts. OCHA is currently headed by UN Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Baroness Valeria Amos of the United Kingdom. OCHA is focusing relief efforts on providing food, clean water and shelter as well as prioritizing the needs of women and girls who remain vulnerable following the disaster.
