Globe Yard edged Riverview 5-4 on sudden death kicks from the halfway mark when the opening night of the Guinness Greatest of the Streets Georgetown Zone commenced at the Demerara Park tarmac in Industrial Site on Tuesday.
Kevin Lewis opened the scoring for Globe Yard in the third minute with a simple tap in down the middle of the goal after he intercepted an intended pass from the final defender.
Travis Martin would level the score line in the 16th minute with an easy finish to the bottom right-hand corner from the left side of the field.
Unable to be separated during the remaining minutes of the second period, a penalty shootout was utilized to determine the outcome of the fixture.
However a 4-4 score line at the end of the penalty shoot-out forced the game into sudden death kicks as neither time missed from the initial spot.
Netting from the halfway mark upon their first opportunity, Globe Yard would emerge victorious as Riverview missed their first attempt from the same distance.
In other results, Hope Street- Tiger Bay defeated South Ruimveldt 1-0 through a Rensford Coleridge penalty kick conversion in the 18th minute while East La Penitence defeated Bent Street 3-0 compliments of a Devon Millington double in the first and seventh minute.
Sealing the win was Sheldon Shepherd with a 15th minute effort. Jermain McLoud netted the event’s fastest goal in 13 seconds as Norton Street-West upset North-Last Entrance 2-1.
Lalrex Fraser netted the game’s deciding goal in the 20th minute whilst Colin Daniels was on target in a losing cause in the 14th.
Broad Street-B through goals from Kevin Griffith, Jamal Cozier and Calvin Pitt in the 13th, 27th and 28th minutes respectively defeated Castello Housing Scheme 3-1. Netting for the losers in the 25th minute was Mark Welch.
Berlin Massive led by a Jamal Brenons double in the 17th and 20th minutes crushed Stevedore Housing Scheme 4-0. Completing the result with goals in the sixth and eight minutes respectively were Travis Heyliger and Devon Charles.
The second round of matches continues today at the National Cultural Centre Tarmac on Hadfield Street and Mandela Avenue with eight fixtures.
In the opening game at 19:00hrs, Festival City will face off with North East La Penitence while Kings-town will tackle California Square from 19:30hrs. At 20:00hrs Durban Street will battle Alexander Village while back Circle will face off with North Sophia from 20:30hrs.
West Front Road will then face off with Cross Street from 21:00hrs whilst Island All-Stars will engage East Front Road from 21:30hrs.
In the final two games, Tucville will face off with Albouystown-B at 22:00hrs and Queens Street Tiger Bay will tackle Albouystown-A at 22:30hrs.
