Officials from the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD), led by the Director of Maritime Safety, Captain Stephen Thomas, this week visited Muritaro village to distribute life jackets to the Muritaro Primary School.
A release from MARAD said that the visit was made to the Upper Demerara, Region 10 village in an effort to promote safety on the waterways following the boat accident on Sunday in which a villager, Captain Dale Duggin died.
Captain Thomas expressed sympathy on behalf of MARAD to the relatives and promised to conduct a thorough investigation into the accident.
The MARAD officials gave the 20 child-sized life jackets to the Headmistress Clorene Bowen for the use of the students who go to school by boat, to enhance safety on the river.
They said that the department will continue to distribute life jackets and to promote the message of safety on the waterways throughout riverain communities in Guyana in an effort to curb the recent upsurge in river accidents.
