A taxi driver was shot during a brazen daylight robbery by armed bandits at a city car wash yesterday.
Fenton Duncan, 48, of Roxanne Burnham Gardens is currently a patient of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) nursing a gunshot wound to the abdomen following the attack.
Police said Duncan, a licensed firearm holder, was shot to his abdomen by an armed man who attacked the car wash on Mandela Avenue, when he tried to resist.
The bandits reportedly stole his chain, two rings, a band and the firearm Duncan had in his possession. A woman, identified by police as Sherry Ramroop, 38, of Eccles, East Bank Demerara, was also robbed during the attack, according to the police release.
This newspaper was told that the woman was robbed of gold bangles. She was waiting for her car to be washed at the time of the robbery. She was visibly shaken when Stabroek News visited the scene of the crime.
Kim Batson, Duncan’s partner, said that she received a phone call at 12pm about the robbery and she then proceeded to the GPHC, where she found Duncan.
She revealed that Duncan was shot at close range. “They told me the bullet entered under his navel and exited through his back…,” Batson explained.
Although police gave the time of the attack as being around 12:25pm yesterday, based on the account given by Duncan’s partner it occurred before midday. In addition, police also said that the attack was carried out by one man, while this newspaper was told that more than one person committed the robbery.
