By way of your newspaper I take this opportunity to relate my anger and disappointment to the Ministry of Education and to the Department of Education in Mabaruma, Region 1.
I refer to an article published in the November 13 edition of Stabroek News entitled ‘Ministry recognizes North West Secondary success at CSEC,’ which is of great concern to me as a parent, and has somehow given me the courage to share my opinion on an issue that has affected me for quite some time now.
My son was a former student of the NWSS. He was also a hinterland scholarship student. In May of 2011, he wrote nine subjects in which he did exceedingly well by earning five Grade Ones and four Grade Twos; he got two distinctions and a certificate in Business Studies. He was awarded the best overall student of Region 1 and made his region proud.
Comparing my son’s results in the CSEC exams of 2011 to this year’s top performer in 2013 has somehow led me to believe that you have to be someone in authority or politically involved to have your child or children’s achievements recognized by the Ministry of Education.
My question is: Why was there no mention of my son’s CSEC results in 2011? Why was it not published in the media? or better yet, where was the Ministry of Education that year or even the previous year? Was NWSS invisible that year?
I’m therefore calling on the Ministry of Education to be more acquainted with the CSEC results of the NWSS in the future.
After all, our children are the future of our country and their accomplishments deserve to be recognized throughout Guyana.
