A newly opened store at Lethem was last night robbed by armed men believed to be Brazilians who fled to the border with a large sum of money.
No one was injured.
A resident who lives near to the store told Stabroek News that shortly after 8pm two men pretending to be customers entered the store and stuck up the staff. They then demanded all monies which were handed over by one of the employees.
While the resident said he was not sure how much money was carted off, he noted that one of the Chinese nationals said that it was in the millions.
The gunmen then escaped in a waiting car in the direction of the Guyana/Brazil border.
Lethem police would only confirm that a store owned by Chinese was robbed and that their investigations were continuing.
