Monedderlust recorded the biggest upset to date, stunning Fruta Conquerors 5-3 on penalty kicks following a tied 1-1 score at the end of the normal and extra time when the Georgetown Football Association (GFA)/Banks Beer Knockout Cup continued on Saturday.
Following a watchful opening period at the No. #5 ground in the West Coast of Berbice, Eon Alleyne almost broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute for the visitors with a left-footed strike from inside the box that rolled wide of the left post.
A glorious opportunity in the 67th minute would go a begging for Fruta Conquerors as Dwayne Lawrence failed to hit the target from inside the penalty area.
Racing into the centre of the penalty area, Lawrence would strike his right-footed effort just over the crossbar after receiving a perfectly weighted Alleyne flat left-sided cross from inside the penalty area.
Fruta Conquerors almost stole the victory with the final kick of normal time in the 90th minute as a diving header from Sherwin Scott from a right-sided corner kick, was held firmly by the Monedderlust keeper.
Following the commencement of the first half of extra time, Monedder-lust almost took the lead in the 102nd minute through a Kevin Bailey strike from inside the penalty box, which was denied by the crossbar.
The stalemate would finally be broken in the 106th minute as Lawrence found the back of the net through a moment of individual skill.
Fighting off a defender to receive a lobbed ball, Lawrence would dribble his defensive marker upon cutting in from the right side of the field, before slotting his effort beyond the reach of the advancing keeper to the lower right-hand corner. Shown two minutes of added time by the fourth official, Conquerors would be unable to defend their lead as Monedderlust snatched the dramatic equaliser in the 122nd minute, through an Artley Bailey header to the lower left-hand corner from a right-sided cross.
Requiring penalty kicks to decide a winner, Monedderlust would display their clinical prowess from the spot as they netted all five of their allotted kicks to seal the famous win.
