An Albouystown resident was remanded to prison yesterday after he was charged with having almost 300 grammes of cannabis that police reportedly found during a search at his house.
The charge read at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court One stated that on December 6, at Albouystown, Shawn McKey had 289 grammes of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Prosecutor Bharat Mangru told Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry that police ranks, acting on information, went to McKey’s Lot 155 Cooper Street, Albouystown residence and conducted a search. During this search, he said, two large transparent Ziploc bags were found tucked inside the legs of a television stand.
According to Mangru, the bags contained the leaves, seeds and stems, suspected to be cannabis. Police officers also found $365,000 at McKey’s home, which is suspected to be the proceeds from his operation.
Mangru’s objection to bail was upheld and McKey was remanded to prison until January 9, when the case is scheduled to be called at Court Two for reports and fixtures.
