Car washer, push cart vendor charged over stolen bike

A car washer and a push cart vendor were arraigned on simple larceny charges yesterday after the theft of a motorcycle.

It was alleged that on December 8, at Georgetown, Dwayne Anthony, 28, of 59 Cross Street, Werk-en-Rust, received a Jialing 110-8 motorcycle valued at $168,000 from Richard Bourne, 42, of Lot 14 Stanleytown, West Bank Demerara, knowing the same to be unlawfully obtained. It was also alleged that on December 8, at Brickdam, Georgetown, Bourne stole the motorcycle from Andre Vince, who was the owner.

They both entered not guilty pleas.

Anthony’s attorney, Paul Fung-a-Fat told Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts that Vince, whose motorcycle was recovered, did not want to press charges against Anthony. According to Fung-a-Fat, Vince realised that Anthony did not know that the motorcycle was stolen. However, Vince was not in court to confirm Fung-a-Fat’s claim. Fung-a-Fat also told the court that his client has no criminal record and asked for bail to be granted.

Subsequently, Anthony, who washes cars for a living, was placed on $70,000 bail with no objections from Prosecutrix Tracymay Gittens.  But Bourne, who is a push-cart vendor at Stabroek Market, was remanded to prison after Gittens objected to him receiving bail. Anthony’s case will be called again on December 17 in Court 6, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. However, Bourne’s case was adjourned until January 17, 2014.
