Queen Street Tiger Bay sealed their quarterfinal berth, edging Castello Housing Scheme 2-1 on penalty kicks after normal time ended 1-1 when the Guinness Greatest of the Streets Georgetown Zone continued last night.
Hosted at the National Cultural Centre Tarmac on Hadfield Street and Mandela Avenue, Queen Street Tiger Bay almost took the lead in the 6th minute as a Deon Alfred strike from outside the middle of the penalty area, went narrowly wide of the left upright.
Alfred would be denied from breaking the deadlock once again in the 11th minute as his left-footed effort came crashing off the left post from just outside the centre of the penalty area.
A constant threat in the opening period, Alfred would not be denied as he opened the scoring in the 15th minute of the second period.
Lurking within the centre of his opponent’s defence third, Alfred would intercept a pass from the final Castello Housing Scheme defender, before lashing his effort into the roof of the net from eight yards out.
However Queen Street’s lead would be short-lived as Sherman Anthony found the equalizer in the 20th minute with a first time right-sided shot to the bottom of the woodwork, after collecting a pass from the centre of the park.
With regulation time unable to find a winner, two four-minute periods of extra time commenced. Clearly the biggest threat for Queen Street going forward, Alfred would miss an open net in the 27th minute as his left- footed strike from just outside the right post came cannoning of the right upright.
Queen Street were almost made to pay for their previous miss in the 31st minute, only for Castello’s Carl Bacchus to fire his right-footed attempt from point-blank range over the crossbar of an empty net, after receiving a powerfully squared pass from the right side.
With a winner once again unable to be found, a penalty shoot-out was required to settle the contest. Asked to begin the shoot-out, Castello Housing Scheme would miss the second and third attempt of their allotted three kicks as Queen Street netted both of their first two kicks to seal the win.
Similarly booking its place in the quarterfinal stages was Berlin Massive who upset Globe Yard 1-0. Devon Charles separated the two sides with a 17th minute left-footed strike to the bottom of the net, after spinning between two defenders from just outside the right post to create some shooting space.
Qualifying for the final eight as well was Hope Street Tiger Bay who defeated Alexander Village 3-2 on penalty kicks, following a nil-all score line at the end of normal and extra time.
