Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry remanded a Bagotstown man accused of possession of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking when he was Friday arraigned in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It was alleged that on December 12, at 34 Norton Street, Bagotstown, East Bank Demerara, Anthony Amsterdam, 22, of the said address, was found in possession of 218 grammes of cannabis, for the purpose of trafficking. He pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Police, acting on information went to Amsterdam’s home around 3.30pm where they searched the premises in front of the accused and his mother.
Prosecutor Bharat Mangru told the court that Anthony was in his kitchen when police discovered a black plastic bag containing Ziplocs therein containing weeds, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis. Mangru further stated that the search continued in a bedroom of the house and three Ziploc bags, also containing suspected cannabis was found. When weighed, the narcotic amounted to 218 grammes total.
Both Amsterdam and his mother were arrested. However, Anthony at some point during the investigation told the police that he was responsible for the cannabis and not his mother.
Anthony, who was unrepresented in court, was remanded. He was ordered to appear in Court Two on Monday.
