A Sophia man was fatally stabbed last evening allegedly by the fiancé of his estranged wife.
Stabroek News understands that 42 year old Carl Garnett of 229 Thomas Street, Section B South Sophia was pronounced DoA when he was brought to the Georgetown Hospital following the incident which happened at around 19:00 hrs.
Garnett was the father of four children, three of whom lived with his reputed wife, and he was expecting a fifth child with his current wife.
The man he was engaged in the altercation with, Akeen Jones, is the fiance of his estranged wife, Rhonda Sobers, and is it is reported that he suffered at least one chop wound to one of his legs.
According to Garnett’s wife, Glevia Cadogan, he called the home of his estranged wife last evening to speak to his son whose birthday will be celebrated tomorrow. When the man called though, Jones apparently answered the phone, and it is reported that the two men had a heated exchange of words, which ended in Jones hanging up the phone on Garnett.
Cadogan said that Garnett dialed the phone again, and demanded to speak to his son, but this attempt did not turn out better than the first. Garnett’s step-daughter, 20 year old Towanna Bowen, said that she was in her room when she overheard him saying that he wanted to speak to his son.
She said that she had seen Cadogan and Garnett talking earlier, but was unable to say much else of what happened since she went to her room and stayed there until she realised that her mother had left the house.
Cadogan told Stabroek News that after Garnett came off the phone the second time he was angry, and he told her that he was going over to Sobers’ house to see his son. The woman said that she pleaded with him not to go, especially since he was already in such a “passionate” mood. Against her pleading though, he set off for Sobers’ Lamaha Springs residence, carrying a cutlass in his waist.
It is there that he got into the altercation which ended in his death and Jones sustaining injuries. Stabroek News was informed that Garnett suffered five stab wounds about the body, which he succumbed to as he was being taken to the hospital by the police. Neither Sobers nor her relatives would say what transpired when approached by the media.
Satbroek News was informed that this is not the first time the two men had a falling out.
