The Health Ministry saluted more 20 individuals and groups for their voluntary blood donations to the National Blood Trans-fusion Service (NBTS) which resulted in 10,014 units of blood being collected by August 31.
Minister of Health Dr Bheri Ramsaran said this achievement is equivalent to 92% voluntary non-remunerated blood donations. He was pleased that “the civic duty of voluntary blood donation has caught on” and commended the staff of the NBTS in this endeavour.
Pointing to cooperation between 70 large corporations and the NBTS, Ramsaran also noted that the target achieved by the blood bank was made through hard work and investment. “This achievement is being used for creating a catalyst for better collection in the future,” he said, according to a report from the Government Information Agency.
Ramsaran also said that less blood has been discarded under the leadership of the new head of the blood bank, Dr Nadia Liu. He then encouraged donors to spread the message of voluntary donation in keeping with the blood bank’s goal of achieving 100% voluntary blood donation in the near future.
Leo Sawh and Ron Robinson were each honoured for voluntarily donating more than 100 units of blood while Mohan Gobin was recognised for donating over 54 units. Six persons donated over 30 units and 12 donated over 20 units each.
Collaborators who were awarded for providing assistance were the Arya Samaj movement, Marian Academy, Ministry of Education, Seventh Day Adventist Church, Guyana Red Cross and the Saraswatie Vidya Niketan School.
