Beterverwagting (BV)/ Triumph United edged Northern Rangers 3-2 in their round of 16 matchup when the Georgetown Football Association (GFA)/Banks Beer Knockout Cup continued at the Tucville Community ground on Monday.
The elements would have the early say before Reon Hopkinson opened the scoring in the 11th minute for the East Coast side.
Running into the penalty area to receive a right side Delroy Dean cross, Hopkinson would bury
his strike to the back of the net after the ball had inadvertently been held up by the noticeable surface water inside the 18-yard box, wrong-footing the ‘keeper in the process.
BV/Triumph would double their lead in the 23rd minute when Akin Curry found the back of the net after latching onto a deflected right sided strike from Dean by the Northern shot stopper inside the penalty area.
Omalli Nassy would cut the deficit to one for the Kitty-based side five minutes later as he found the back of the net from the penalty spot, following a clumsy challenge inside the 18-yard box.
One minute into added time of the opening period saw the Georgetown side levelling proceedings through a spectacular Orandel Squires strike.
Picking up the ball from just outside the centre of the 18-yard area, Squires would unleash a thunderbolt of a right footed strike that sailed into the top right hand side of the net.
The East Coast giants would not have to wait long to retake the lead as Dean opened his personal tally with a 48th minute penalty kick conversion, following a wild challenge inside the penalty area.
With the heavy conditions underfoot clearly taking its toll on the players, Wendell St. Hill would fashion the Kitty unit’s best opportunity of a relatively mundane second period in the 87th minute.
Receiving the ball 25 yards from goal in the centre of the park, St. Hill would unleash a powerful strike that sailed narrowly wide of sneaking inside the right hand side of the net.
BV/Triumph will now face the winner of the Milerock and BK Western Tigers fixture in the quarterfinal round. In the second matchup, Santos swept aside Buxton United 2-0 in their round of 16 fixture.
