It will be Georgetown versus Linden in a titanic doubleheader when the Georgetown Football Association (GFA)/Banks Beer Knockout Cup competition continues today in the mining town of Linden at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) ground.
In the feature contest at 20:00hrs, BK Western Tigers, led by the trio of Hubert Pedro, Trevon Lythcott and Solomon Austin, will face off with Linden side Milerock FC and their trident of Clarence Huggins, Jermaine Grandison and Jermaine Fordyce in an eagerly anticipated showdown.
Western Tigers coach, Calvin ‘Fluman’ Allen during an invited comment said: “The unity in the squad is good and the work ethic is right there. We are working on consistency on both the offensive and defensive level. We are also doing a lot of finishing drill because we expect this to be a tough game.
“Keeping a clean sheet is very important and we will focus on the things we can control which is our performances, staying organized, playing as a unit and scoring our chances. We are not looking too much at them, we know what we have to do and what mistakes we have to eliminate,” added Allen.
Brian Joseph, coach of Milerock FC said: “Preparation has been going good; we have had a few good sessions in which we got to work on the tactics we wanted to use.
“I expect us to win. Our aim is to play on the final day of the event. We taking games one at a time, we can’t look to far ahead. We can’t come to these yearend tournaments and expect easy games, you just can’t take no team for granted,” added Joseph.
In a rematch of last year’s quarterfinal round, the army will once again take aim at Linden when the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) powered by the trio of Eusi Phillips, Delroy Fraser and Royan Morrison engages Netrockers and their duo of Denzil Prince and Errol Davis in what should be an exciting matchup from 18:00hrs.
Victorious by a 4-1 score line in their previous encounter, GDF coach Denzil Thompson during a brief pre-match comment said: “We are strengthening our strengths and correcting our mistakes. I always say that the team that makes the least mistakes will always win.
“It’s just about going out there and putting out what we trained. We have to play in units and put the ball across the line,” added Thompson.
Eon Wills, coach of Netrockers during an invited comment said: “Preparation is coming on reasonably good even though the weather been a little threatening.
The army side tends to handle this condition better while my team prefers drier conditions. But as it is we have been training to acclimatize in this condition.
“We coming to win, we are not taking anything away from them but I don’t believe they have more skillful players like my team. However, they are a fit and physical bunch and I am prepared to match them physically. We are taking back the bridge,” said Wills.
