Suspected of stealing over $400,000 of items, a Berbician man was yesterday brought before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on charges of burglary and larceny.
Carl Crandon, of 6 Courtland Village, Berbice, was charged with breaking and entering the home of Renetta Teixeira. He was also charged with stealing a number of tools, property of Mark Mendonca.
Crandon, who was described as a repeat offender, was remanded by Magistrate Ann McLennan until today
It is alleged that between December 10 and December 11, 2013, at Waterfront, Port Kaituma, Crandon
broke and entered the home of Teixeira and stole two cartons of Dunhill cigarettes, valued $20,000, seven packs of Bristol cigarettes valued $3,500, three amplifiers, valued $140,000 and a crossover, valued $40,000.
According to Prosecutor Deniro Jones, Teixeira had secured her home before she went out on the day in question. A security guard later noticed the building pried open and Teixeira subsequently discovered the items missing. According to Jones, the woman had noticed Crandon acting suspiciously and a report was made and the police subsequently confronted the man. A search was conducted and the cigarettes were found on him.
According to Jones, Crandon had given three different explanations for having the items. At first, Crandon had claimed that he had been given the items. He later claimed that he had bought them from a shop. Crandon finally claimed that he had bought the items from a man, the court heard. During the search conducted on Crandon, a number of tools were also found. These tools, it is reported, were admittedly stolen by Crandon. Mendonca, the owner of the tools, went into the police and positively identified the tools as his own, Jones said.
The tools, valued at $210,000, were allegedly stolen by Crandon between December 9 and December 10, 2013 at Waterfront, Port Kaituma.
