(Trinidad Guardian) Slinger Francisco, the Mighty Sparrow, continues to get better as he convalesces in a New York rehab facility. Taking a break from therapy on Tuesday at the High Land Health Care Centre, in Queens, Sparrow spoke for a long time, and even sang. The Calypso King has been hospitalised for the past three months after going into a coma on September 22.
Sparrow, who lives in the United States, confirmed that he will not be in Trinidad for Christmas. Sounding strong and in very high spirits, he said, “Tell my fans and the people of T&T, they better watch out, because Sparrow is coming to town; and I am coming out dancing. “People think it will be Santa, but when they look closely they will see it is Sparrow,” he added. He sang Santa Claus is Coming to Town, and in the background on the phone, one could hear the nurses and doctors applauding when he ended.
“They love my singing,” said an upbeat Sparrow. Expressing thanks to God for sparing his life, Sparrow said, “It’s Christmas and we’ve arrived at this point. In September when I was in the coma, many people didn’t think I’d be here right now.” Sparrow says he does therapy every day, beside Saturday and Sunday.
He added,“I have two therapists and I believe that I am making steady progress and coming along quite good.
“The expenses for my treatment have been exorbitant, but people have begun calling for me to perform at shows before and after Carnival in different parts of the States. In fact, certain people have been requesting special songs. I don’t know for sure when I’ll be able to fly home. “Please wish everybody a merry and blessed Christmas and a happy new year.”
