There should be speed bumps on Mandela Avenue

Dear Editor,

Each week there are numerous accidents on Mandela Avenue, some more serious than others.  I am certain your readers recall one of the most recent fatal accidents involving a taxi driver whose car was sent spinning through the air after swerving to avoid a collision and running up onto the parapet of Texaco gas station.

All too often drivers illegally overtake vehicles on the double lines, and even overtake on the curve just before you reach the Texaco gas station.  Additionally, vehicles coming onto Mandela Avenue from Hadfield, D’Urban and Norton Streets often drive out into the middle of the road to force traffic travelling along Mandela Avenue to stop and allow them to pass; mini-buses are the most notorious perpetrators of this.

In Suriname some of their major roadways have speed bumps strategically located on both sides of the traffic divide as a way of forcing drivers to slow down and prohibit dangerous overtaking.

I am encouraging the Georgetown City Council as well as the Traffic Department of the Guyana Police Force to implement speed bumps, especially considering that very soon Mandela Avenue and Sheriff Street are likely to be widened, thereby facilitating more space and opportunities for dangerous driving that could result not only in vehicular damage but countless injuries and loss of life.

Yours faithfully,
