Six educational establishments are now the beneficiaries of five million dollars thanks to the contributions of CGX Energy Inc. through its social responsibility programme.
The Canadian-based oil and gas exploration company made the presentation
on Wednesday evening at a cocktail reception at Cara Lodge.
The recipients are Queen’s College, which received a sum of $290,000; ISA Islamic School ($408,000), Saraswati Vidya Niketan ($1.2 million); Providence Primary School ($1.6M); and the Covent Garden Secondary School ($100,000). The Student Programme for Innovation in Science and Engineering (SPISE), a summer programme for Caribbean students who are interested in studying and pursuing careers in Science and Engineering, also received a cheque in the sum of $1.2M.
Plans for use of the funds include upgraded IT departments, improved science departments, and the purchase of necessary equipment.
According to Suresh Narine, Chairman of CGX, the company embarked on the initiative because education lays the foundation for growth in the country. Narine also announced that from next year the social responsibility budget will double and is planned to increase again the following year.
