A West Ruimveldt family was yesterday morning robbed and terrorized by two men armed with guns, but believes the men were not there with the intention of robbing them.
Eugene Fernandes who operates an upholstery business at his 101 Mandela Avenue, West Ruimveldt home said the incident occurred at around 10 am while he was at home working. “I had just finished sewing this chair set and was coming from inside when my daughter yell and tell me to run, but I had nowhere to run,” he said.
It was then that he saw the men. “One of them was in front of me and he tell me shut me mouth and when he crank he gun I hold on to it and the bullet fall out. He ended up lashing me to my head and my right eye,” he said.
Fernandes said that they were relieved of approximately $160,000 and several cellular phones but the men left other valuables and were making peculiar demands. “Something ain’t right about this. I think they came here for other reasons. They keep asking where the gold deh and they kept asking for my wife. They keep saying that my wife is who they want and the gold. I am not a gold miner. We don’t have no gold. They didn’t even take a laptop that was right outside. All my pockets had money…I know robbers would tell yuh to empty your pockets and so on but these didn’t,” the man said.
“My wife was at back door and she ran toward the bathroom and push it in… the door has no lock so she couldn’t lock it and the guys were trying to force it open and I started pulling them from the door. This is the first time we have been robbed. I never see them around here. They just appear just like that from nowhere,” he said.
“A police lady just come and say that they gon go and mek a spin and see if they find anyone fitting the description. They supposed to carry me with them and see if I see the person,” he added,” he added.
His wife said that the only reason that she can think of that the men might have wanted to harm her was because of a court case she has been attending regularly.
Fernandes also said that he went to the hospital for treatment.
