Den Amstel Porknockers edged Mahaica Determinators 2-1 in their round of 16 matchup when the Georgetown Football Association (GFA)/Banks Beer Cup continued at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, Bourda on Friday.
Trayon Bobb created the first real chance of a scrappy opening half, forcing the Mahaica goalkeeper into a save low to his left in the 23rd minute with a left-footed strike from just outside the centre of the box. The West Demerara side would eventually open the scoring in the 41st minute through a Delon Lanferman penalty kick conversion.
Awarded the dubious spot kick after the ball struck the defender’s arm in his attempt to clear his lines, Lanferman would calmly convert from the spot as he dispatched his effort into the lower left hand side, sending the ‘keeper the wrong way in the process.
The 55th minute of the second stanza almost saw Den Amstel doubling their advantage through Bobb. Positioned on the left side of the field, Bobb upon racing into the penalty box lobbed his effort narrowly wide of the right post.
He would make his intentions further known seven minutes later, firing his left-footed shot narrowly wide of the lower right hand corner from the left side of the penalty area, after receiving a lobbed forward pass from the centre of the midfield.
Netting the only goal separating the two sides, Lanferman would be denied from increasing his personal tally in the 71st minute.
Lurking inside the penalty box in anticipation of a left side corner, Lanferman would latch onto a poorly punched ball by the Mahaica custodian within the left side of the six yard box, only for his strike at point blank range to be denied by the goalkeeper.
On the defence for the majority of the encounter, Mahaica would level the score in the 76th minute through Azuma Roberts’s strike that was deemed to have crossed the goal line after coming off the crossbar by the official, after a right side cross evaded the Den Amstel backline.
Aspirations of a comeback victory however would be extinguished in the 87th minute through a Delon Charles own goal.
Forced to defend a left sided corner, Charles, in his effort to clear the danger within the left side of the Mahaica six yard box, would inadvertently deflect the ball past his own goalkeeper, effectively sealing Den Amstel’s place in the final eight.
In the earlier fixture, defending champions Sunburst Camptown sealed their quarterfinal’s berth, defeating Winners Connection of Linden by a 3-0 score line.
