Two houses located in the same yard at Rosignol Village, West Bank Berbice went up in flames around 3:15 am yesterday apparently by arson and a 24-year-old suspect is in custody.
One is a two-bedroom wooden building belonging to Kissoon Dyal Samaroo, 45, and the other, a one-bedroom was shared by his daughter Tejwattie ‘Vidya’ Mursalin, 23, and her six and four-year-old daughters.
Mursalin was not at home at the time and said neighbours related that just before the fire started they saw a car parked on the street.
They then noticed the suspect and three other men leaving the yard.
About three minutes later they saw the blaze coming from her house. By then the men had already gotten into the car and sped off.
Her father who had been sitting on his landing also saw the men leaving the yard. But he did not think anything
was amiss because he was accustomed to the suspect being there.
He only realized the house was on fire when he heard some youths shouting.
The youths rushed to the scene and tried to put out the blaze but the house was already engulfed. It spread quickly to Samaroo’s house.
Mursalin told this newspaper she left on Friday for a “wedding house” on the Corentyne and the suspect, with whom she shared a relationship, was left in the house.
She said he was supposed to join her at the wedding yesterday but showed up on Saturday evening instead.
She said she and the man had a misunderstanding and he left telling someone that Mursalin “would see what would happen…” She telephoned him to ask what he meant but he denied saying that.
About two hours later, he called her back and started cursing again. He told her he was at another wedding house on the Corentyne.
