Priyanna Ramdhani defeated Ambika Ramraj in straight sets to clinch the girls’ U19 title when the Woodpecker Products annual Christmas singles badminton tourney concluded at the Queen’s College Courts on Friday.
Ramdhani took the opening set 21-16 and clinched the title in emphatic fashion, romping to a 21-9 win in the second set.
Older sibling Narayan Ramdhani defeated Nicholas Ali in a three set thriller to clinch the men’s Open title. Ali defeated Narayan Ramdhani in the opening set 22-20 but Narayan Ramdhani responded by winning the second set 21-18 and the third 21-15 to take the crown.
In the semi-finals of the men’s Open division, Narayan Ramdhani defeated Noel Shewjattan 21-12, 21-13 while Ali brushed aside Christopher Persaud 21-13, 21-4.
Earlier in the quarterfinal, Narayan Ramdhani defeated Armand Ramdhani 21-17, 21-13 while Shewjattan defeated Jonathan Mangra 21-15, 21-15.
In the final two quarterfinal matches in this division, Persaud edged Darrell Carpenay 21-9, 19-21, 21-18 and Ali crushed Josh Oudit 21-4, 21-1.
In the U-19 girls section Priya Ramdhani placed first while Ambika Ramraj and Althea McDavid were second and third respectively.
Priya Ramdhani also placed first in the U-15 division while Ramraj was second and Abosaide Cadogan and Siya Persaud joint third.
In the U-19 men’s division, J. Mangra and Sachin Ramdhani were joint third while Persaud and Shewjattan were joint third in the Open category.
In the U-15 division, Mangra was the overall winner with Hemraj Beharry second and A. Ramdhani and Ransell Ramsaroop, joint third.
The presentation of prizes to the respective divisional winners was done immediately after the finals by senior badminton players Lance Sanford and Marlyn Sanford who are visiting Guyana from London, England.
