Eon Smith, 32, of 123 Third Street Alberttown, who stands accused of having 3.970 kilogrammes of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking was remanded to prison yesterday.
According to a police report read by Police Prosecutor Bharat Mangru, police ranks from the Narcotics Branch, acting on information went to Smith’s home, at Lot 23 B Norton Street, Werk-en-Rust and found two amounts of cannabis. The first parcel amounted to 3.215 kilogrammes, while the other amounted to 755 grammes. Mangru further mentioned that the cannabis was found among clothing and a passport that belonged to Smith. Smith was said to have orally owned the cannabis, however, he declined to give a written confession. Additionally, Mangru objected to bail citing no special reason given by the defence.
Smith’s lawyer, George Thomas told the court that his client does not live at the address police stated in court. According to Thomas, Smith and a woman had an altercation at the address mentioned in the charge, which resulted in him visiting the police station. Thomas also mentioned that Smith is a caretaker and that he has two minor daughters all in an effort to secure bail.
Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry refused bail and remanded Smith to prison until January 6, 2014, when the case will be called again.
Meanwhile, Leon Murray was also in the court for the possession of two grammes of cannabis. He pleaded guilty and was fined $3,000 along with 6 months community service to be performed at La Penitence Police Outpost starting January 2014.
