A Kitty man who is alleging that he had only been doing a friend a favour, was yesterday brought before the Georgetown Magistratesโ Court after live ammunition was found inside the sneakers he had carried to a prison inmate.
It is alleged that on December 23 at the Georgetown Prison, Kleon Benjamin had in his possession 2 live rounds of ammunition without being the holder of a firearm licence at the time.
According to Prosecutor Bharat Mangru, Benjamin had gone to the prison around 11:30 hrs to take clothing and footwear to a prisoner, Anthony Watson, when he was stopped for a search. The search, Mangru said, revealed the live cartridges in the left side Nike sneakers that was in the defendantโs possession.
Benjamin was told of the offence, arrested and cautioned.
Benjamin pleaded not guilty to the charge and claimed that he did not know the live rounds were inside the sneaker since he was doing a favour for a friend who had been in the interior with him.
The friend, he continued, had asked him to deliver the items to the inmate.
Mangru objected to bail based on the seriousness of the offence. The 29-year-old was refused bail by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and is to return to court on January 14 for report and fixtures.
