The Georgetown Football Association (GFA)/Banks Beer Cup continues today with the traditional Christmas Day quarterfinals double header at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, Bourda.
In the feature contest at 20:00hrs, undisputed local champions Alpha ‘the Hammer’ United will face off with the always consistent Guyana Defence Force (GDF), in what is expected to be an exciting encounter.
Displaying a disjointed performance against Pele in their round of 16 fixture, Alpha will require an improved showing led by the likes of Andrew Murray Jr. Dwight Peters and Gregory Richardson if they are to get by the free scoring army unit.
Routing Linden side Netrockers 8-1 in their earlier engagement, GDF will depend on the quartet of Delwyn Fraser, Eusi Phillips, Delroy Fraser and Desford Williams to lead the heavy artillery when kick off time commences.
Alpha United coach, Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover during an invited comment said “It’s a good matchup; they are a fit team that is trained by a coach who understands modern day football trends. Once again we won’t be taking any opponent lightly and the army has been doing well in the tournament.
“We have to go into the game disciplined and try to get the result. The end of the day, if we play well and win 1-0 or 2-0, it will be satisfying. What will not be satisfying, is if we win but not as a team. Winning in a disjointed way will be a worrying thing,” noted Dover. The opening encounter at 18:00hrs will see defending champions Camptown FC opposing Santos in an eagerly anticipated showdown.
Confident following their dismantling of Kashif and Shanghai champions Buxton United by a 2-0 margin in their round of 16 affair, Santos will look to their foreign import Christof Wensly of Suriname to lead the assault in partnership with Anthony Abrams and Ryan Seals, when opening whistle sounds.
Improving with every encounter, the Campbellville side will look to build on their earlier round of 16 win over Winners Connection as they aim for a coveted semi-final spot. Hoping to propel to victory will be the capable trio of Devon Forde, Jahaal Greaves and Troy Prescod.
Santos Coach, Dwain Babb during an invited comment said “Everything going good, there is nothing much to complain about, just the weather. Right now the team is in good spirits and we hoping to jump this hurdle”.
“We already defeat the Kashif and Shanghai champions Buxton United and now we looking to defeat the GFA champions. I don’t think we can create the plays we would like because of the weather, we will have to play more defensive and hope to get the win” said Babb.
Joseph ‘Bill’ Wilson, coach of Camptown in a pre-match comment said “Right now we are focused on more internal assessment. Obviously every game is different and we expect to be playing better and improving with every game.
“We are making a lot of significant progress and I am satisfied with the effort and commitment of the players,” added Wilson.
