Ash Education thrashed President’s College by an incredible 13 goals to nil and Ann’s Grove Secondary outgunned Bladen Hall 3-nil on penalties when the Chico/Kashif & Shanghai Elite Next Generation Football Tournament continued on Christmas Day.
Assisted by a sizable crowd at the No. 5 Village ground in Berbice, the home side did not disappoint their supporters and unwrapped a gift of goals on the overwhelmed East Coast outfit.
Strikers, Atlin Browne (23rd, 45th+, 57th, 74th, 87th) and Lester Cummings (12th, 39th, 45th, 54th) were a two-man demolition crew as they found the back of the net on nine occasions in the crushing defeat of President’s College.
Browne’s five goals and Cummings’ helmet trick were complemented by Neil Munroe’s brace (2nd and 66th) and strikes by Akeemo Watts (61st) and Jamal Angus (68th).
In the Bladen Hall/Ann’s Grove fixture, the scores were deadlocked at one apiece after regulation time until the Ann’s Grove marksmen outshot their opponents.
Captain, Daniel Pellew for Ann’s Grove (8th minute) and Kevron Durant (20th) were the goal scorers before the penalty shootout.
The wins clinched quarterfinal berths for Ash Education and Ann’s Grove.
In their quarterfinal fixtures, Ash Education will face Annandale Secondary today at the Buxton Community Centre ground while Ann’s Grove will tackle tournament favourites, Wismar/Christianburg two hours later. Kick off time is 14:00hrs.
At the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground today from 15:30hrs, tournament heavyweight Waramadong will lock horns with Charlestown Secondary. MacKenzie High will also take on St George’s at 17:30hrs for a spot in the final four.
Up to the semi finals, all school-aged children will be admitted free to each game.
The winner of the tournament will pocket a record $1.2M in cash of which 75% will go towards a project identified by the school.
They will also receive a trophy and 25 replicas along with the prize money.
The institutions placing second, third and fourth will each receive prize monies amounting to $750,000, $500,000 and $250,000, in cash respectively.
The second and third place teams will receive trophies and 25 silver and bronze medals respectively, while the fourth place team will receive a trophy.
As customary, the grand finale will be staged on January 1 at the Providence National Stadium. (Emmerson Campbell)
