Derrick ‘Lights Out’ Richmond scored a sensational knockout over James Walcott (3-7-1) to clinch the vacant national super middleweight title on Boxing Day when Nation’s Promotions staged the ‘Linden Showdown’ at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) ground.
The 23-year old southpaw of Berbice caught Walcott with a thundering left to the jaw at two minutes and 57 seconds in the fourth round that sent him crashing to the canvas where he lay motionless for several tense moments. Richmond, who was coming off a TKO win over CABOFE middleweight champion, Edmond ‘Wonder Boy’ DeClou in October, improves his resume to three wins, one loss and a draw.
In the feature bout of the card Shelly ‘Agricola Boom’ Gibson unanimously defeated arch rival, Shaundel Parks in their super heavyweight trilogy.
With the win, the 308-pound Gibson has now won two out of the three bouts and improved her record to 5(1)-7-0 while Parks, who tipped the scale at 415 pounds, dropped to 2-3.
In the opener which was a snoozer, Kelsie George and Romeo Norville clinched, taunted and jabbed each other in their four-round super middleweight bout which fittingly ended in a draw.
The bout was historical as the combined weight of the combatants was in excess of 700lbs, a first for any female or male bout in Guyana.
During the brief heavyweight bout of the evening, Trinidad and Tobago-based Shawn Corbin upped his record to 17 (12)-4-0 when journeyman Anthony ‘Big Six’ Augustin decided he had enough and quit on his stool before the start of round three.
In the second bout of the evening involving junior welterweights, Lindener, Cassius Matthews and Kishawn ‘Special K’ Simon, Matthews was awarded a majority decision over the busier Simon who landed more punches throughout the six-round affair.
Two judges scored the bout 58-56 for Matthews while the third had it 58-56 for Simon.
Simon told this publication that he felt he was robbed of a victory and is eager to get back in the ring. (Emmerson Campbell)
