Teen shot dead at Moraikobai was forestry graduate

Theiana Andrews, the teenage girl who was shot dead at Moraikobai, Mahaicony Mission around 2 am on Thursday had recently graduated from a forestry course and was expecting a job in that sector.

The suspect, who is still on the run, used a 12-gauge unlicensed shotgun that reportedly belonged to his employer, in the fatal attack.

The shot, according to her father, Mark Andrews, damaged Theiana’s left arm as well as her abdomen, causing her intestines to protrude.

at the Mahaicony Hospital when she apparently died on the way.

A live round and packets of cocaine and marijuana were recovered in her yard.

Theiana was pursuing a course at the Mahaicony Technical and Vocational Centre but the suspect, known only as ‘Chris’ had forced her to quit.

She had shared a short relationship with the man who worked as a tractor operator with a logger at Yarida, a few miles away from her home village.

Mark Andrews, 53, said the man promised to take care of his daughter and “he would send her to school.”

But instead he “fooled us” and took her away to Number 62 Village, Corentyne at his parents’ house where they lived for a few weeks.

He then moved back to Moraikobai and lived there with her for about three weeks.

But the family observed that he was “using drugs and telling a lot of lies. We didn’t like how he was behaving… and he left.”

His daughter never complained about having problems or if the man was abusive, Andrews said, but they would see her crying often.

After they were separated, Andrews said, the man contacted him.

Andrews said he told him “my daughter don’t want you anymore and you must have less to do with my daughter.”

Theiana and her younger siblings who were staying at a house their father rented at Good Faith, Mahaicony, travelled to Moraikobai on Tuesday for the Christmas holidays. Her siblings were attending school on the coast and she was taking care of them.

Around 8 pm on December 25, the suspect arrived with a tractor at Andrews’ house. But “I tell he bai I don’t want these people tractor in my yard,” Andrews said.

According to Andrews, the man told him that he wanted to talk to his daughter and he responded, “me daughter don’t want nothing to do with you and me ain’t want you got anything to do with me daughter because me ain’t want no problem with you.”

The man then went away with the tractor but returned around 1:45 am while he was sleeping and called out to him and his wife, Norma.

Andrews said he did not allow him to enter and insisted that he should leave. He recalled, “After I start behaving like that on this boy my wife holler on me.”

He then left to purchase cigarettes nearby and his wife closed the door. The man then kicked down the door and entered.

Theiana’s younger sister, Mona Lisa had a “scramble” with him and she tried to wrest the gun away. By then, Theiana got up and attempted to push him out of the house.

She reportedly told him: “I don’t want you in this house because I don’t want anything to do with you,” the father said. It was at this point that he shot her.

Andrews was a short distance away when he heard the loud explosion followed by hysterical screaming in the house. He rushed back and saw the suspect running out of the house and ran after him.

The suspect attempted to shoot him but Andrews grabbed the “gun barrel” but the man overpowered him and took it away and “plunged it [the gun barrel] into my ribs.”

The suspect also tried to hit him with the gun but he dodged and fell in the process and his light fell out of his hand. The suspect then made good his escape.

Reports from a post-mortem examination proved that the teen died from shock and haemorrhage due to gunshot injuries.
