Two men were killed last evening when the vehicle they were travelling in crashed head on into a low-bed trailer on the Canal No 2, West Bank Demerara Road.
Dead are Shameer Haniff, 19, of Little Diamond, East Bank Demerara and his friend Roy (only name given), 22, of Canal No 2 Polder, West Bank Demerara.
Reports are that Roy, the driver of the red Fielder wagon bearing licence plates, PPP 6627, lost control of the vehicle which ended up crashing into the low-bed trailer. There are also reports that several beer bottles
were found around the vehicle.
Haniff’s father who was on the scene was weeping uncontrollably and had to be consoled by relatives.
The man said that he last saw his son who works at BK International earlier in the afternoon. “I last see him this afternoon at around 5 but I don’t really know what happen. I just got a call about the accident,” the distraught man said.
Scores of persons gathered on the scene to get a glimpse of the accident and to assist in pulling the mangled vehicle from the trailer.
Relatives of Roy said that he was a logger in the interior and they only learnt that he had come out of the ‘bush’ when they heard about the accident. Several persons who knew him said that he had come out of the bush to ‘sport’ for Christmas.
Stabroek News understands that Roy had left the area some time last year after he was wanted for the rape of a girl.
