Top junior players Daniel Lopes and Gavin Lewis upstaged the seasoned pair of Leyland Leacock and Nicholas Fenty to win the Trophy Stall men’s doubles final which took place recently at the Le Ressouvenir Club Courts.
In the final of the tournament which lasted over 2 and one half hours,
Lopes/Lewis won 3-6, 6-2, and 6-3.
The pair of Leacock/Fenty started out well, taking control of the match with powerful serves which they followed up with solid volleys.
In the second set, an early break helped to tilt the momentum in the direction of the Lopes/Lewis pair who gained confidence and started to unleash powerful passing shots to take the second set 6-2.
In the decider, the youngsters outplayed Leacock/ Fenty with a full repertoire of strokes to win the third set 6-3 and secure their first ever men’s doubles title.
They had earlier defeated Jason Andrews/Ronald Murray 7-6, 6-4 in the semi-finals while Leacock/Fenty defeated Carlos Adams/Godfrey Lowden 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
President of the Guyana Tennis Association (GTA) Ramesh Seebarran was pleased with the final.
“It was the best men’s doubles final we have seen in recent times. It is great to see the junior boys finally penetrating the senior categories,” Seebarran stated at the closing ceremony.
“We work very hard towards making more young players elevate their standard of tennis,” he added.
The tournament, which was played on three weekends at the Le Ressouvenir Tennis Club, was contested in five categories namely mixed doubles, novice medley doubles, ladies doubles, men’s doubles and men’s over 35 doubles.
Tournament sponsor Ramesh Sunich, proprietor of Trophy Stall, was unavoidably absent but had pledged his continued support for the sport.
In other results , Novice Medley Doubles (Round Robin): Victor Demchenko/Tatiana Styallina defeated Philbert Clarke/Delon Fraser 6-3 and also defeated Orande Dainty/Robert Bostwick 6-2 to win the round robin novices medley doubles while Orande Dainty/Robert Bostwick defeated Jamal Goodluck/Tandy Primo 6-2.
Carlos Adams/Godfrey Lowden who defeated Harry Panday/Stephen David-Longe 6-2, 6-0 and Rawle Sue-Ho/Owen Lewis 6-3, 6-1 to win the men’s over 35 doubles title.
In the mixed doubles (single elimination) Leacock/ Shelly Daly-amdyhan defeated Lewis/ Nicola Ramdy-han 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 while in the ladies doubles round robin robin Shelly Daly-Ramdyhan/Nicola Ramdyhan defeated Shawna Gentle/Afrucia Gentle 6-3, 6-3 while the Gentles defeated Denise Barrington/Jamaali Homer 6-2, 6-2.
