Dear Editor,
Dr Veerasammy Ramayya is perhaps one of the most outstanding humanitarians I have come to know in Guyana. For years, this man has delved into his own resources to help the poor, disadvantaged, needy and neglected. Earlier this year, he lost his wife and companion, something which took a real toll on him, nevertheless he continued on his life’s journey.
For years, he has been vocal on numerous issues both nationally and internationally. He has spoken out on the numerous instances of injustices in our land, perpetrated against numerous persons. Countless Guyanese have sought the advice, counsel and help of Dr Veerasammy Ramayya. Every year for the past 11 years or so he has opened his home to hundreds of children by treating them with food, gifts and money for Christmas.
Dr Ramayya has truly transcended politics, race, class, ethnicity and especially religion. He is not a person that tolerates injustice and unfairness. I admire him for these standards.
Mr Moses Nagamootoo summarized this great man’s ideals and philosophy two Sundays ago during one of the Christmas parties for the children when he said, “And I want to ask the people of Whim Village to recognize this great son of Whim village because today, for all we have seen, he is a very devoted and devout Hindu and he has allowed his yard and money and resources and scores of people in the back, preparing the food, to be used here for a Christian event. That is a great person! That is a good person—when they can go beyond their own belief and their own faith and reach out to others!”
In Guyana, we wait until someone has died to shower them with good words and praise. Let us honour this great Guyanese and recognize his efforts today. If there was ever to be a Person of the Year in Guyana or in the Caribbean for 2013, I’d happily want it to be Dr Veerasammy Ramayya, a true friend and human being.
