Facing three charges, including forging a Republic Bank Guyana Ltd cheque for the sum of $295,450, a 25-year-old man was on Monday remanded to prison when he appeared before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. Quincy July was not required to plead to the three charges when they were read to him by Magistrate Faith Mc Gusty. It is alleged that on December 27 in Georgetown, July uttered to Roopnarine Tiwari one Republic Bank cheque, dated December 27, 2013, for $295,450. July, it is alleged, knew the cheque to be forged.
It is also alleged that on December 27 in Georgetown, with intent to defraud, July delivered to Tiwari a Republic Bank cheque for $295,450, for the delivery of beverages despite knowing the said cheque to be forged.
July’s final charge alleged that on December 27 he forged a Republic Bank cheque, dated the said date, for the sum of $295,450, payable to Tiwari.
When given an opportunity to speak, July claimed that he had been home with his girlfriend and son when he was called outside by a man known to him to do a task. This task, he said, involved him delivering some goods to the Palm Court nightclub for Top Brandz Distributors. Pauline (only name given by the defendant) of the company had explained to him that there would be a staff party later and they were currently understaffed and needed someone to deliver the stocks for them.
The defendant added that he was given a shirt by Pauline which identified him as an employee of the distributors. He also claimed that after the cheque was discovered to have been forged he was beaten with a gun until the police came.
Prosecutor Renetta Bentham objected to bail based on the seriousness and prevalence of the offence. She also stated that the investigations are incomplete and that if granted bail July might not return to court for trial.
July was instead remanded until January 8 when he is to make his next appearance.
